In Aliki, in a beautiful garden there is a unique museum for anyone who wants to know the Cyclades and their history. A museum where you will find all the traditional arts applied and you will get a taste of the vanishing authentic Paros.
The last great naval combat waged with wooden sailboats, the naval battle of Navarino (1827), finalized the independence of Greece. The allies, the British, the French and the Russians, defeated the fleet of the Ottoman Sultan Mahmud II, reinforced by Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt’s fleet.
It is a sunny and windless February morning. On Paros, an agricultural island by birth, Spring is making herself already felt. Our eyes are filled with the greenness of the new crops on the fields and the blueness of the archipelago that surrounds the land. A palette of cold colors, say the experts and the beaches are empty. Still, the brown earth and the stones that spring from her guts make up for the loss of warmth.
A group of young people brings on the coming of spring to the island. A spring of creativity, cultural expression, coexistence, ingenuity, communication, and harmonious transition from the old to the new.
Anna Kortianou-Kagani has intertwined her name with the culture of Paros and is the person one is bound to run into in practically every event related to it. Whether it be an exhibition, a live performance, a concert, a lecture or a hiking venture, Anna Kagani is always present. Active, approachable and practically-minded, she has all the attributes needed for a plan to go forward and not remain just an aspiration.
As I’m writing this text, with Lefkes lying at my feet and the windmills around the village crowning my head, I’m wondering how to fit 40 years into an article.
